Prairie Moon Nursery in Winona, Minnesota

In 2023, I began a 2.6 acre prairie restoration on my farm. These areas were primarily alfalfa fields for cattle grazing when we moved to the property in 2005. They’ve gone through several changes: one was the “ball field” when the kids were growing up, but mostly they just needed to be mown. When I stopped mowing them (to save time, money and energy), they became “meadows” – lots of non-native flowers and weeds. Now I’m converting them to prairie habitat for monarch butterfly and ground-nesting birds. It’ll take several years, but we’re getting started!
